Test Drive the New Photos App
by Steve Testone on July 14th, 2010

The new Photos app is almost here! This new app is so much more then just an update, it's a completely new app from the ground up. The current Photos app was one of the first tools that SnapPages ever launched so it's been out there for quite some time and it felt a bit rusty compared to some of the new apps. It used some outdated technologies and we were pretty limited because of it. One example of this was the fact that the version of flash it was written in could only load Jpeg images, which is why we don't currently allow any other format.

For this, and many other reasons, I decided it was time to kick the old one to the curb and come up with something new. Now it's not completely ready to be launched but I decided to share it with you early if you want to start test driving it. If you want to try it out, all you need to do is login to your SnapPages account and then go to the following url:

http://snappages.com/apps/photos

That's it! If you do try it out please give me your feedback. We still have some other really cool features that we are adding before the launch, like the ability to import and export photos to other sites like facebook, flickr, and a few others. Enjoy!

Saw that you had a "Graphics" library! Very nice, I was disappointed that you didn't have a have for me to import graphics when i first started creating sites. Given that, I couldn't import an image into the Graphics folder :( I'll check out the rest of the app and let you know what I find!

Thanks!

At the moment you can't specifically upload to the graphics library because it automatically sets something as a graphic if it's a png, gif, or small jpeg. Everything else gets catagorized as a photo still.

Hi Steve, looks great, especially full screen use and ability to upload files other than jpeg are very nice, as often I copy an image from a website to add to my blog and most of the time that is not a jpeg, so I always have to convert.

Really like the red eye removal. Anyway to zoom in prior to using red eyevremoval.

Is there, or will there be, a way to upload more than one image at a time? The new app looks great, by the way. Thanks for continuing to develop the products.

When the window pops up that allows you to select a file, you should be able to select more then one and it will upload them all at once.

Steve: for some reason I can't get the reply link to work. Anyways, thanks for the heads up on batch uploading. That helps.

Steve - The new photo app appears to work great. I did encounter an odd issues with really large pictures. A couple that were over 5MB didn't upload correctly, even though I figured that the photo should have been resized automatically upon upload. Batch upload did work well, but when I got the upload error (it just sat and churned for like 15 minutes), I had to close the browser and reopen it because everything froze.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do some testing with some larger images to see if I can find out what the problem is.
