The New Themes App is Here!
by Steve Testone on January 31st, 2011

Over the weekend as we released our much anticipated update to our popular Themes app. This is one of the most important apps on SnapPages so we wanted to make it even better. There have been several major new features added plus just about every other feature has been updated and improved upon in some way. The majority of these updates were directly based on feedback from our awesome users so thanks to everyone who helped contribute. I'll be highlighting some of these updates in more detail with further blog posts during the week so for now I'll give you a brief overview of some of the most significant changes.
New Menus
The first thing you might notice in the new editor is that we've moved some of the menu items around. This is obviously not a "huge" feature but I thought it merited a mention so that you aren't confused. Originally when the first Themes App was created most of the customizations happened in the header area of the Theme so most of the options just dealt with this. As we added more features the menu stopped being as intuitive as we'd want it to be so hopefully the options are better organized and labeled now.
Advanced Color Picker
Sometimes it's the littlest things that make the biggest difference. That's why I'm really excited about the new color picker tool. You can now choose just about any color you want. There is even an eye-dropper tool so you can match colors to anything on your theme.

The coolest new part of this has to be the color suggestions. Sometimes it's hard to know what colors look good together. Now when you select a color, some color palette suggestions will appear on the right hand side that are pulled in from
Link Boxes
For everyone that wanted there logo to be a link back to the home page, we decided to give you an even better option. Link Boxes are little green boxes that you can draw over any area in your header and turn it into a link that can go to anything you want. These will show up as green boxes when you are editing them, but they will be invisible when you are not.
Alignment Guides
Everything just looks better when it's all lined up. Now when you are moving objects around in your header, you will see some green lines appear that will help you do just that. This should not only make it faster and easier to line everything up, but it will help your site look more professional.
Theme Browser
The Theme Exchange area is now gone and has been replaced with the new Theme Browser. I'll write a more later on the reasons behind this but the short answer is that I just don't think the Theme Exchange was helping people make better websites.

This area will eventually be full of themes that professional designers have created using our existing theme templates. You can download and use these themes on your site or edit them and make them your own.
Convert To CSS
This feature is available only through our Developer account, and it was highly requested from our existing developers. With the developer account we added the ability to create your own CSS themes from scratch to use on their client sites. The problem was you couldn't use existing themes that you created in the Themes app so it was difficult getting started. Now you can export any theme you create in the Themes app to a custom CSS theme and customize it even further.

Congratulations Steve and team! This is a really significant update. We've been using the previous custom CSS tool to build custom SnapPages sites for clients and this will make it much easier. The color picker is a big improvement and the new edit menu makes much more sense...

Great workmanship as usual. I appreciate your commitment to high quality, easy to manage applications that we all really appreciate. If you have good content the website editor should never get in the way to sharing it.
