Pages 2.0 Beta open to all!
by Steve Testone on September 17th, 2012

Today we are opening up the beta testing for the new Pages app to everyone that wants to try it out. We are very excited about this release and what it will mean for the SnapPages community and we hope you are too. The Pages app is our flagship app because it handles the all important job of creating and editing your web pages. For this reason we are having a much longer beta testing time than normal because we want to get it right before it becomes the default editor.

What you need to know.

Even though we are opening this up to everyone, it is still in beta which means it's not 100% complete at this point. This also means that there are still likely a few bugs here and there and we'll need you to let us know about them if you find them. Also this means that we will still be adding in new features as the beta continues and we get closer to launch.

Backwards Compatibility

The new editor will be able to load up and edit any of your existing web pages, but it's important to  understand that once you save a page using the new editor, you won't be able to edit it with the old editor any longer. However if you need to you can always revert a page to the previous saved version that was created in the old editor if you have issues with the new editor.

New Features

There are more new features than I can list here, but I'll highlight the big ones.

HTML5
The new app has been re-created from the ground up in HTML5 vs. Flash. This allows for a lot of great new features like true WYSIWYG editing so what you see in the editor should match what you see on your site. It will also allow you to edit pages from your iPad and a whole lot of other stuff you'll see in the future.

Billboards 2.0
Another element that has been completely re-imagined is our billboards feature that allows you to add horizontal slideshows to the tops of your web pages. These new billboards are also completely in HTML5 which means they will show up on mobile devices. We've simplified the process of creating billboards quite a bit so that the end result is a higher quality slideshow. In addition to this we've added some really awesome ways to add some style to these billboards, as well as re-size them!

It's important to note that your existing billboards will need to be converted into the new format when the page is first edited. After this conversion takes place you will probably need to make some additional manual adjustments as well.

Custom Page Layouts
One of the most highly requested features was that our users wanted more page layouts than just the default ones. We thought we'd create something even better and just let you customize and create your own page layouts!

New Web Blocks
We've already added two completely new web blocks and we have plans to add a few more before it's actually launched. The two new ones we've added so far are the Anchor and the Spacer blocks. The Anchor block will allow you to drop anchor tags on your web page that you can link to. This allows you to link to specific content on a page. The Spacer block is exactly what it sounds like. It allows you to add a custom vertical space in between blocks so you can get that pixel perfect alignment you've always wanted.

Custom Code Snippets
We've re-written how our Code Box blocks work so that they are more powerful and flexible than ever. You should now be able to use almost any client-side custom code you want in these boxes and it should work seamlessly with your existing page. In addition to the Code Box, there are two other places you can inject some custom code. In the page settings menu, you can now drop some custom code into the header and the footer of your web pages.

Getting Started

Launching the new app is pretty simple. When you log into your SnapPages account, just visit the following URL to access the new Pages app:

That's it!

We need your feedback!

As always, we need your feedback to truly make this a success. If you find a problem or have any questions you can submit them at the link below. Also it never hurts if you just want to let us know what you love about it too so we know when we are on the right track!

Custom code in the header and footer! Oh wow, Snappages just became 1000% better!
Roel - September 20th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
Great work. The billboards are schowing up on my iPad, but NOT on my iPhone (iOS 6). Any idea why? Thanks.
Steve Testone - September 21st, 2012 at 2:34 PM
I just tested it out on my iPhone with iOS6 and it appears to be loading. Are you still having issues with this?
Amber - October 3rd, 2012 at 1:40 AM
thanks for listening, responding, improving!
Neel - October 3rd, 2012 at 9:03 PM
I am chomping at the bit for a HTML 5.0 version vs the current flash version. The billboards work great if you have your flash installed and are not on an ipad etc.
The current flash version has caused some issues with users of the sites I have built plus it does not work as well on iphones and ipads.
Can't wait for the new release!

Steve Testone - October 5th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
No need to wait Neel! Just follow the instructions above and you can start using it right now!
Leanne H - October 9th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
so if you use this editor, you cant go back.... does that mean you need to upgrade your account etc....just wanting to know what the issue is.
Steve Testone - October 10th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Well if you use the new editor, you should be able to go back to the old one, but you'll need to revert the pages you edited in the new editor back to their previous versions. None of this requires any upgrade to your account.
leanne H - October 10th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
but if you like the new editor, do you need to have more than the basic account? Just trying to figure out exactly who will have that editor and who will not. sounds great tho.
Steve Testone - October 10th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
The new editor will be available to both free and paid accounts.
VXPRO - October 10th, 2012 at 7:07 PM
It does not appear that you can resize the image in the billboard. You can only resize the billboard itself. Is this correct?
Steve Testone - October 11th, 2012 at 5:05 PM
Yes, the new billboard autoscales the image to fit within the space of the billboard. This allows the billboard to change sizes dynamically.
MAnoel - November 20th, 2012 at 5:33 AM
I'm having some problems with this issue too. The image never fits the billboard.

Ive asked for this feature about a year ago and I have always had trust with you guys!
This time I MUST HAVE THOSE PAGES TRANSLATE WELL INTO CYRILLIC (RUSSIAN) PLEASE!!! I need to be able to use the russian cyrillic in navigation bars (i think its the charset "1251"). At this moment i could only use default english names which confuses people who dont use the english language at all. Also there could be just one navigation bar throughout the site, but regarding my request this will need more work..
Robert - October 11th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
headings switch back to default when dragged
Steve Testone - October 11th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
I'll look into this and try to fix it with the next update.
Steve Testone - October 11th, 2012 at 5:06 PM
Can you open up a ticket on the help desk so we can look into this in more detail with you?
Steve Testone - October 12th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
It looks like this can work within the new editor, but you'll need to go into the page settings and manually set a custom url for the page as it can't convert the cyrillic characters into a valid URL automatically.
RobertRyda - October 11th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I copied a page that i want to edit and save as a new page (another one based on the one i "save as" and use its clone).
Anyway, when i edit one of the two pages (each one has to become a separate entity at this point) the other one gets affected too. I tried twice. How do I save a separate copy to edit? Thanks
Steve Testone - October 11th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
I haven't had any reports of this issue yet so I'll have to do some testing. Hopefully we can get this fixed soon. Thanks for letting us know about it.
Lara Renkema - October 12th, 2012 at 3:16 AM
Love the updates! THanks.

Two requests:

Would you think about adding a block which shows the site structure/navigation/pages, for example at the bottom of some sites you can see all the pages that are part of the site.

Allowing emails sent with the email tool to be visible on the site: for example an archive for past newsletters.
Steve Testone - October 12th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! The first one you mentioned might work better in the new theme editor somehow. As for the other suggestion, I believe those are stored online someone so I'll see if we can provide links to those urls in the future to accomodate online archiving.
Hans - November 1st, 2012 at 9:43 AM
I am having a billboard "issue". When I edit the billboard, the photos are in the place that I want them, but when I view them live the photos are pushed downward so that half the photos are cut off. You can check out our site to see what I am talking about as I don't know if I am explaining it correctly. www.lolericaentertainment.com Also, I can't drag the photo to place it where I want it in billboard editor.
Karen - November 2nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
I am also having this problem with the billboard editor - all photos come in as super size, and I can't resize them to fit the billboard. Please fix ASAP!
Roy - November 20th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
I love the upgrade....and the code box is a major 2 million points....I used (sampled) with the paypal and iti gives so many more options...awesome. How long before the beta test is over?
Mark Collier - January 18th, 2013 at 12:23 AM
I want to upgrade to the beta, but I am wondering about some of the questions here from months ago... Thoughts?
Steve Testone - January 18th, 2013 at 4:21 PM
Hey Mark. Can you be more specific? There are a lot of questions on here. If it was a bug most of them have been addressed by now. Was there something in particular you were having an issue with?
Lisa - February 21st, 2013 at 12:27 PM
If I launch my site with this beta would the slideshow come up on iPhones/iPads?
Jay - April 30th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
