How to Survive Mobilegeddon
by Steve Testone on April 23rd, 2015

You may have heard the buzz that the internet as we know it is about to end with the great mobilegeddon that Google unleashed on the world on April 21st. In short, Google made a change to their search algorithm that will penalize websites for not having a mobile friendly version of the site. Sound confusing? Don't worry, we're here to hold your hand and walk you through this scary (not really) new reality. If you don't already have a mobile website, we provide a very simple solution to fix this with the flip of a switch.

The Facts

First off, let's all sit back and take a big breath. The changes Google is making are not nearly as bad as everyone is making them out to be. Search results from desktops and tablets will not be affected at all. Instead, this change only affects people who are using Google from an actual mobile phone. Additionally, Google is not kicking you out of search results if you don't have a mobile friendly website. If you fail to create a mobile version of your site, your site will just be penalized in the rankings from mobile searches.

To understand why Google is doing this, you have to understand the goal of Google as a search engine. Their job is to provide people with search results that they feel are the most relevant to the person who is performing a search. The idea is that if you are searching from a mobile phone, you would rather see a mobile friendly site than trying to zoom in and read a large site that doesn't fit on your screen.

The Fix

The good news is that if you don't already have a mobile friendly website with SnapPages, the fix (in most cases) is extremely simple. If you are using version 2.0, and you are not using an old 1.0 theme, you can just go into the "Settings" area of your dashboard and turn on the mobile version of your website (by clicking 'Enable mobile site').

As soon as you do this, your site will pass Google's mobile friendly test with zero problems. Then, you can go in and customize the look of your mobile website in the "Themes" area of your dashboard. To do this, just look for the new "Mobile Theme" that was added to the 'Themes' section of your account after you enabled the mobile feature.

That's it! Pretty simple, right? After you enable the mobile site, every time you edit a page, it will automatically update the mobile version as well. If you want to learn more about how the mobile stuff works, you can check out our previous article we posted when we first announced the feature.
